The trip has been AWESOME so far, and very uneventful. There are lots of stories, but what I’ve experienced so far has been just about what I expected going into it.
As far as the poverty goes, it’s just as bad as you can imagine. If people have 1 meal a day, they are lucky. All of the leftovers on our plates go to the Haitians who have been helping us because they probably haven’t had a nutritious meal. The area where we are staying is very rocky and has clay soil all over the place. My friend Bob tested the soil once and found that there are no nutrients in the soil that people grow their plants in.
As far as the weather goes — it’s rains a lot. I do have a VERY nice rain coat that I borrowed from Laura’s dad which I am getting heavy usage out of! It is wonderful — thanks Frank!

The plane ride was pretty much uneventful getting here. Once we landed in Port Au Prince, we took a 3 hour bus ride to a hotel where we hung out a bit and slept. The next morning we got up, ate a good breakfast and then took another 3 hour trip up the mountain. It was CRAZY! I have pictures from the car down the side of the mountain. The landscape is gorgeous here. I can’t wait to post my pictures and show all of you. When we got here, it started to pour, and our truck couldn’t make it all the way up the hill to our compound because of the slippery/squishy dirt. So, we had to walk all of our bags and supplies up the hill in the pouring rain. We weren’t able to prepare any of our raincatchers to put up today, so we hung out and ate and then hit the sack early for a long week.
Today we put up 9 rain catchers with 3 different teams. It was cool to see the excitement on everyone’s face when they got the raincatchers. I will post pictures of some of the raincatchers we built later.
Well, I think that’s all I have time for. There are a ton of stories, so maybe next time I see all of you, I’ll fill you in on more details…
